The above photo shows Melton Street that had been built by Wilkinson & Jarvis for the Eastern & Midlands Railway in 1881. Melton Street was named after the Melton Constable Hall Estate, the Ancestral seat of the Astley Family. Upper left is the rear of Astley_Terrace that had been built as cheap housing stock for the same railway in 1886. Melton Street houses were built of red brick with decorative bands and quoins in a buff brick, they had uniform window proportions and Welsh slate roofs. Directly behind the lines of washing is the Railway Hall that was incorporated in the soon to be built Railway_Institute. The area in front of Melton Street was developed into gardens_with_the_bowling_green_and_tennis_courts. The area with the fence and sheds to the bottom right is part of the gas works.
