By the 1901 Census, The Company Side (South side) of Melton Constable building had been completed.
This was made up of:
Astley Terrace Nos1-12
Melton Street Nos 1-28
Colville Road Nos 1-32
Grove Road Nos 1-7
Briston Road South side Nos 1-21

On the North side of the village 14 Houses had been built in Burgh_Beck_Road, 4 on the East side and 9 on the West side and the End House of Joseph Morrell whose census sheet had been received too late to be inserted into the correct place.
Kitchener Road had 8 houses, 6 on the East side and 2 on the west side.
There were 2 houses in Gordon_Road unnamed as such but recorded on the census sheet as being off Briston road.
And Briston_Road (North side) a row of 14 Houses and a Shop (the Co-Op) The first 10 Hoses of this row were Named as Ferndale_Terrace with the last 4 houses before Burgh_Beck_Road named Arrandale House (later renamed as Wake or Wyke), Avondale House and a pair of cottages named as Bure Cottages.
Also, on the North side of Briston_Road 2 Houses had been built one named May Villa which became the Doctors House and Deben Villa (which later became the home of Alfred Hamer the school Headmaster). The rest of the houses making up that row were completed and in use by the 1911 census.
At some point between 1958 and 1962 (roughly) House numbers in Melton Constable were altered. Some roads (Gordon_Road, Kitchener_Road, Burgh_Beck_Road, Grove_Road and Briston_Road) went from continual numbers to one side been odd numbers and the other even numbers. The reason for this may be the fact that while Briston_Road (South side) was numbered from 1 to 21, and the row of house making up Ferndale_Terrace, Briston Road were number 1 to 10 those newly built ones between the Post office and Kitchener_Road were also numbered 1 to 15 so Briston Road had two sets of houses numbered 1 to 15, which may and probably did cause some confusion.
Evidence for this comes from a Sales Poster dated 1958 in the Norfolk Record Office for ‘House (former Police House) 14 Briston_Road, Melton Constable. Thus, the road layout would have been as follows: from the corner of Gordon_Road - the Post office no. 15, Police House no. 14, May Villa no. 13, Deben Villa no. 12, houses 11 to 1, (Kitchener Road) Ferndale Terrace 1 to 10, Arrandale House, Avondale House, 1 & 2 Bure Cottages.
 
As with any census records (which records only those at that house on the night of the census) they do not always record everything in the correct order, some enumerators were more careful than others and of course over the centuries some have been lost etc.
So, while the Roads on the south side can be confirmed, those on the Private side of the Village and the occupants of each house in those roads are more difficult to identify.
Therefore, the record shown on each of the Road pages on this website are as enumerated on the nights of the 1901, 1911, 1921 census and the 1939 Register, which was for recording those people who would need Ration Books and National ID cards, which everyone had to carry during the Second World War.
