There were no paid holidays, the works would simply close for the second full week of August. Outside the confines of the station, housing had been built on Melton_Street in 1881. Astley_Terrace followed in 1886, then the remaining company land north of the station was filled more dwellings between 1886 and 1889. There was also a school, a Railway Institute and a recreation ground.
