Colville Road

23rd March 1897
Nos. 1-10 with further construction underway - 23rd March 1897
Above Photo
M&GN's own houses on Colville Road, along with newly planted trees. Colville Road and the south side of Briston Road were built later during the same phase of construction and have half timbered gablets, overhanging eaves, three panelled doors and squarer windows than the earlier Melton Street.
The road was named after Henry Edward Colville, Viscount Colville of Culross, who was the Chairman of the Great Northern Railway from 1879-1895. When he visited Melton Constable, some M&GN employees gleefully told him that he had a road named after him!

Colville Road was named after Lord Colville of Culross (Charles John Colville), chairman of the Great Northern Railway (1879-1895) who was instrumental in the 1893 formation of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN).

Freight wagons can be seen standing in sidings above the end of the road. The Gas Works entrance was at the opposite end of the road along with the fire station, which was actually a shed containing the fire pumps. Alfred Rose's bakery, which for many years was run by Mr. Gaskin, stood on the corner of Colville Road and Briston Road.
