Gordon Road was named after General Charles George Gordon also known as Gordon of Khartoum. Gordon was an officer in the British Army, who saw action in the Crimean War, China and the Mahdist War at Khartoum, where he was surrounded by the Mahdist forces. Gordon held Khartoum for as long as he could but on the 26th January 1885, Khartoum fell and he was killed.

Melton Constable's first Post Office opened in January 1882 and was in Melton_Street but by 1915, it had moved to Briston_Road, on its corner with Gordon Road, where it was run by the sharp tongued Miss Nellie Linder.
The Post Office was semi-detached with the Police House next door on Briston Road.

Nelly Linder & Nurse Clarke
These two ladies run the Melton Constable Post Office. It is hard to describe them. Nelly as local postmaster had a loud piercing voice. Her call of ‘Freddie telegram’ sounded over Melton Streets as she called my brother Fred to the post office. Nurse Clarke, an ex nurse, was just a sharp. They run the GPO very efficiently.
